Acid or Alkali? Make a pH indicator from red cabbage

Hello Year 6,

I hope you are enjoying your different learning experience at home, my two boys and I have done a very exciting, but very simple science investigation.

The only specific thing that you need is a red cabbage.

The dye from red cabbage can work as a pH indicator. The pH scale shows if substances are acid or alkali or neutral.

You can create your own red cabbage indicator by pouring boiling water over cut up red cabbage and leaving it to soak for 20 mins. The video in the link below describes it all anyway.

Then you can use your red cabbage indicator to test out household substances. We poured a little water into each jar, then added about 20ml of red cabbage indicator to each before adding about 15 drops of the substance we were testing. Our photo shows the results of our testing, you can test anything liquid – or anything that dissolves in water.

From left to right we tested:

citric acid, lemon juice, vinegar, orange juice, washing up liquid, water, milk, jeyes fluid, bicarbonate of soda, ammonia, bleach. And we got a beautiful rainbow of results!!

This was a fun activity, with very quick results and clear instructions in the video.

My children made a results table to show their results too.

Hope you have some fun with this.
